“When did you first realize you were straight?” To some, this may seem like a funny question to ask, but to gay people, it’s a question known all too well. Asking something, sort of asinine, to the majority of people doesn’t seem right. Gay people suffer this question repeatedly, throughout their lives. Do you actually remember the exact moment that you realized your sexual identity, either straight, gay, bisexual, lesbian, trans, or any other sexuality-spectrum? Living queer, out in the open or in the closet, were born this gay, baby!
It is a scientific fact that you’re born gay. It’s natural. It’s not something that is taught or learned, or even caught, like the common cold or flu. Being gay is not some choice you can just wake up one day and decide to be. Just like gay people cannot wake up one day and be straight. Homosexuality is biological and an anomaly found in every animal species on the planet.
Be it an evolutionary bit of DNA to help stave off the population or just fabulous genes, gay people, whether you like it or not, were born this way. The American Psychological Association describes homosexuality as “an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions to men, women, or both sexes,” ranging “along a continuum, from exclusive attraction to the other sex to exclusive attraction to the same sex.”
While an exact ‘gay gene’ has yet to be proven, the overall scientific community agrees that homosexuality in humans is biologically caused by genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. A consensus of the scientific community support biologically-based theories as to why humans are homosexual, including genetic factors and uterine environment. They have proven that homosexuality is a normal variation of sexuality and has nothing to do with our mental health. Scientists do not regard homosexuality as a choice.
Homosexuals have been around a long while. Not only are there gay animals running around out there, homosexuality is not a new evolutionary twist. Gay humans and proof of our existence goes back to times before ancient Greece. Being queer has been around for centuries and at times, were completely accepted in society. Some well noted gay individuals include Alexander the Great, Alan Turing, and Freddie Mercury; all were as big of queens as they were contributors to the world.
Fear not, straight people. The gays aren’t here to try and turn you gay or inflict gayness upon you. Homosexuals are just simply here to say “Hey, we’re gay. And we were born this way.”
