A new effort to draw awareness to and appreciation of the lifetime of contributions made by LGBT older adults.

As gay Pride season kicks off, do not forget those that came before who helped open the doors for LGBT people to be able to live their lives open and free. The marchers, protestors, flag bearers, court plaintiffs, victims, and fallen soldiers who gave their lives to propel the LGBT movement forward are finally being commemorated for advancing the cause. May 16 has been officially named as National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day to honor those activists, allies, and leaders that came before us.

Chase Brexton Health Care, the LGBT Health Resource Center, has officially as of last year designated May 16 to the National Day Registry as the official National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day. The challenges, struggles and triumphs of older LGBT adults will be commemorated on May 16 for its one year anniversary during National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day. The tagline, “for creating the path and leading the way”, is featured on all the media for the first May 16th celebration of our LGBT foremothers and forefathers.

National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day is a new effort to draw awareness to and appreciation of the lifetime of contributions made by LGBT older adults.  The gains made in recent years toward LGBT equality sit squarely on the backs of those whose struggles and victories, extraordinary courage and everyday authenticity, pioneered the path toward freedom. Honor Our LGBT Elders Day works to unite the LGBT community and its allies to celebrate and thank those individuals who fought on behalf of us all.

The goals of creating the first National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day are raising awareness about the ones who came before, recognizing their accomplishments and struggles, providing tools like health care services and counseling, patient resources, and providing adequate social services to those who helped propel the LGBT equality cause.

The second annual National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day wishes to honor and celebrate the lives of our LGBT elders, whose authenticity every day and activism has helped improve the lives of LGBT people everywhere.
