The streets of Kelowna, B.C. will be a buzz of activity on Thanksgiving weekend as over 3,000 runners lace up to participate in the 19th annual BMO Okanagan Marathon events. The BMO Okanagan Marathon 2013 race events take place on Sunday, October 13, 2013.

As one of the flattest and fastest  courses in Western Canada, it’s become a favourite race for many runners from British Columbia, Alberta, and the Pacific North West. It also helps that this is a Boston Marathon qualifying event, which helps drive the numbers.

The BMO Okanagan Marathon has three race events: full marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k races. Participants in all race categories will receive a BMO Okanagan race bag, technical shirt, and finishers medal.

Runners from outside the area should be reminded that the mornings at this time of the year in the Okanagan can be quite cool, near freezing, but then rise to a comfortable autumn temperature as the sun rises. The forecast is for a mix of sun and clouds with a chance of rain.

Kelowna’s beautiful waterfront Central Park is the hub for all the weekend long activities including race expo, race package pick-up, start and finish lines, and the kids zone.

Race Day Schedule:

  • 6:15am – 2:00pm: Gear check
  • 7:15am – Marathon start
  • 7:45am – Half marathon start
  • 8:15am – 10k start

From course marshals, race officials and medical teams, to the race expo and operations crews, hundreds of volunteers are what power this event. The race energy is echoed as thousands of spectators line the streets to cheer on the runners.

Participants are encouraged to join Running Room founder and CEO, John Stanton, at 9:00am on Saturday, October 12 for the Friendship Walk and Run.

The BMO Okanagan Marathon is a very home-grown type marathon event. The organizers have done a great job to involve local businesses and give back to the community. There’s a lot of community pride in this event. But don’t mistake this as small race; a great team of race professionals work behind the scenes to deliver a professional and high-end experience.

There’s still time to register to run in the BMO Okanagan Marathon 2013 or to volunteer.
