Is the type of gay porn you watch online making bareback sex the new normal?

Back in the 80’s and early 90’s, during the peak of the HIV/AIDS crisis, gay porn studios were diligent in the use of condoms by models appearing in scenes. Porn stars are seen as role models and set presidents on what is acceptable for the general public. However, with the evolution of the Internet, technology has taken over and porn studios are getting smarter.

“Porn is important because it reflects what’s going on in the gay community,” say gay porn star, Christopher Daniels. “What I’m seeing more and more is that people are opting not to use condoms.”

Internet technology has become so advanced that porn studios are using it to monitor extreme details of every scene that they release online. They are watching to see what type of scenes people are watching, how many people are watching each scene, the number of times a scene has been viewed, the frequency of social sharing, and the demographics of people watching. It’s now down to a science. Online porn is revolutionizing the gay porn industry and what types of porn studios are producing.

“There are lots of reasons studios are going the bareback route,” says Christopher Daniels. “They are producing a product people want to see.”

Analytics show that people like to watch specific types of porn, and bareback sex (sex without condoms), has seen a substantial increase in recent years.  The result is gay porn studios are producing more bareback scenes.

“I’m in the middle on the issue,” explains Christopher Daniels. “I work with condom-only studios. A lot of my porn friends bareback and what scares me is that the industry is going the bareback route. In the future, maybe models won’t get the choice.”

It’s a valid concern for guys who are think of, or have just entered the industry. Today, models have the choice of using condoms or barebacking, depending on the studio. Some studios only shoot bareback and some studios mandate all models must use condoms. It varies from studio to studio.

There is a direct correlation between people watching bareback porn and their behaviour in their personal sex lives.

“In the 80’s and 90’s it was important to use condoms, and now it’s changing,” said Christopher Daniels. “People are using condoms in their personal lives. I believe we all have a choice to do whatever we want.”

Heavy education over three decades has helped generations understand the importance of safer sex and people are making smarter choices. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has passed, however, there is still no cure and until that time, people need to take responsibility and accountability for their sexual behaviours.

“Just because you got tested two weeks ago doesn’t mean you’re safe,” cautions Christopher Daniels. “If you do bareback, that’s a personal choice. Go for it. But if you live your life on a soapbox and say how bad barebacking is and then go do it yourself, you just look like an asshole.”

Christopher Daniels admits that in his personal life there have been times when he has had bareback sex, but quickly adds he regularily uses condoms.

“I make my own personal choices and everyone can make theirs,” stated Christopher Daniels. “It’s part of being an adult. Talk to your partner. Get tested.”
