Orange Therapy CocktailThe colour orange in the rainbow pride flag stands for healing.

Over the decades the gay community has face major challenges, from equal rights to HIV/AIDS. It has taken a toll on many members of the community, but with pride and resilience, the LGBT community finds ways to overcome these barriers.

Healing can represent an individuals struggle with coming out, to dealing with relationships with family members or a partner. Navigating through these emotional roller coasters is never easy and can be very hurtful. It builds strength and character, and it’s these individuals who add vibrance and new confidence to our neighbourhoods.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 80’s and 90’s took a huge toll on the gay community. Thousands lost their lives and negative stimgas erupted. Today, in jurisdictions like British Columbia, which is a world-wide leader in HIV/AIDS research, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has been declared over. There are calls for other jurisdictions to follow suit using the same methodology, to put an end to the crisis around the world, so people can get on with living, instead of dying.

Political battles of marriage and equal rights equality are far from over in many countries around the world, but many nations are taking action from other leading countries, like Canada, to change legislation and give equal rights to everyone.

As the gay community continues to overcome these challenges, it becomes an opportunity for us to appreciate the hard work that members from our community have done. People like Harvey Milk, stood up to help the gay community and it’s time to pay respect this Pride Month and to thank them, and start forgiving, so we can heal.
