Champagne; a classy choice for calorie-counting dieters

The holiday season can be a nightmare for people who count their calories. While there are temptations to over-indulge, smart and disciplined people can get through the holidays without packing on excess pounds. Skip the gravy, eat extra turkey, stick to vegetables, and pass on dessert. But when it comes to drinking, which will happen, champagne is the classy choice for calorie-counting dieters.

A four-ounce glass of brut (it can only be called champagne if it’s from the Champaign region of France, otherwise it must be called brut or sparkling wine, depending on the style), has about 95 calories per glass. An entire bottle only has 570 calories (based on 25 ounces)! Compare that to an average vodka-soda at 135 calories, or 460 calories for a rum and eggnog! The calories add up super fast.

In addition to having low calories, brut has other awesome health benefits. According to a 2007 Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry study, bubbly has similar health benefits of red wine; a high level of polyphenols and antioxidants. Polyphenols found in the bubbly beverage can protect the brain cells against conditions such as Alzheimer’s and stroke. The antioxidants protect the body’s cells from damage and death.

Drinking any amount of alcohol can make it hard to lose weight, especially if it’s not done in moderation. Heavy drinking leads to high caloric intake, which will pack on the pounds. Any alcohol, no matter its health perks, is only healthy when consumed in moderation. It’s also important to note that many studies have suggested that alcohol, including low calorie like brut, slows the bodies ability to burn fat.

While many people struggle with weight loss, managing weight, and bulking up on meaty muscles, paying extremely close attention to what you consume, both eating and drinking, is incredibly important. Making smart choices is essential. During the holidays, before you have a drink, or two, or eight, put together your game plan and set realistic expectations.

This holiday season, make smart decisions. If you’re counting your calories, pop open a bottle of bubbles. You’ll be the classiest person at the party!
