Winter is a beautiful time of year, full of comfort, indulgence, laughter and smiles. It’s a time to enjoy time with your loved ones and fill your life with fun ways to keep warm on those frosty winter nights. It does have its drawbacks though, one of them being the harshness of the cold and the impact on ones skin. The cold winter weather can strip your skin of natural oils and dry it out. Follow these 8 winter skincare tips to keep your skin looking amazing.
- Wash in lukewarm water, not hot!
Hot water may feel nice in the cold winter months but it is terrible for stripping away all the natural oils that keep your skin looking glowing and lovely! Keep your water tepid; a little warm if you must but make sure it’s not hot enough to take away all the lovely oils your skin needs.
- Switch to an oil based moisturiser
On the theme of oil, if you are using a water based moisturiser switch to oil based one. This will help lock the moisture in for longer to prevent those harsh winter winds from stripping away what your skin needs to keep healthy.
During winter it’s normal not to wash as frequently as in summer because you don’t get as sweaty. This can lead to a build up of dead cells that can prevent moisture from getting in. Regular exfoliation will remove dead skin cells to allow moisture in. Moisturise right after to lock it all in.
- Get your feet greasy!
Feet are forgotten during the long winter months making foot care easy to forget. During winter they need a stronger moisturiser than in the summer months. Use a petroleum-based moisturizer. For a stronger effect cover your feet in the moisturiser before you go to bed and put some light cotton socks on to ensure baby soft skin.
- Don’t forget sunscreen
It can be easy in winter to forget sunscreen but the winter sun can be just as strong as the summer sun. Prevention is better than cure and the single most important component of any skin care regimen is sunscreen. Sun damage is irreversible and ages you faster than time, so don’t forget to keep topping up the sunscreen through the winter months.
- Use overnight masks
Make sure to give your skin regular moisture boosts by using overnight masks. Get a rich oil based night cream and put plenty on to give your skin an overnight top up.
Central heating can dry your skin out no end! A humidifier will keep moisture in the air to prevent your skin from drying out. Place a few small ones throughout the house to ensure moisture is dispersed evenly and your skin is kept soft and supple through the winter months.
- Drink more water
Many people drink less water in the winter months than in the summer months; often too little. Because you aren’t getting warmth it’s natural to not feel thirsty as often. It is important, not just for your skin but for your health, to make sure you are drinking enough water.
