Theatre lovers sick of the same old same old will be delighted in hearing a brand new, award-winning Broadway show is coming to Canada for a few limited engagements. Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away will jump onto Broadway Across Canada’s 2018-2019 season with scheduled performances across the country.
“On September 11, 2001, the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all.”
Come From Away is a musical involving the aftermath of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001 and the lives that were immediately affected by the tragedy. Within hours of the attacks, 6,579 passengers aboard 38 planes were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, at the edge of the world. The musical tells the story of the passengers stuck in transit and the townspeople of Gander who rallied together when the population doubled after the flights were grounded.
Nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, and winner of the Tony Award for Best Directory, Come From Away won five Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical and four Helen Hayes Awards including Outstanding Musical Production, and is nominated for nine Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical. This brand new, award winning Broadway show will begin its North American Tour with shows in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa, respectfully, during Broadway Across Canada’s 2018/19 seasons.
With a book, music and lyrics by two-time Tony Award nominees and Outer Critics Circle Award winners Irene Sankoff & David Hein, Come From Away features direction by two-time Tony Award nominee and Outer Critics Circle winner Christopher Ashley (Memphis), musical staging by two-time Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine (Rocky), and music supervision by Ian Eisendrath (A Christmas Story). Scenic design by Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt (Act One), costume design by Tony Award nominee Toni-Leslie James (Jelly’s Last Jam), lighting design by two-time Tony Award winner Howell Binkley (Hamilton), sound design by Tony Award nominee and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Gareth Owen (End of the Rainbow), orchestrations by Tony Award nominee August Eriksmoen (Bright Star), and music arrangements by Ian Eisendrath.
Come From Away has been included in the “Best Theater of the Year” lists by the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, San Diego Union Tribune and Toronto Star, and the musical was featured in The New York Times’ “Memorable Theatre of 2016.” After record-breaking sold-out, and critically-acclaimed performances at Seattle Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. and Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre, and a recent stint on Broadway, Come From Away producers are excited to take their award-winning show on the road.
“From the first time we saw Irene and David’s telling of this extraordinary true story, we were passionate to share this tale of hope and humanity with as many people as possible,” said producers. “With the overwhelming emotional response the show has received from critics and audiences alike, we are thrilled to now be setting out on this journey across North America.”
