Broadway Across Canada Sound of MusicA brand-new production of The Sound of Music is coming to Canada, as part of a North American Tour. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony, Grammy and Academy Award-winning Best Score and story, including songs “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

Broadway Across Canada will be bringing The Sound of Music to Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre September 12 – 17, 2017, Edmonton’s Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium September 19-24, and Calgary’s Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium September 26 – October 1.

The Sound of Music is the story of a young, whimsical nun asked to go nanny for a widow’s 7 children: The Von Trapp family. When she arrives, she finds a heartbroken father unable to provide the joy and happiness once felt when his late wife, the children’s mother, was alive. Maria slowly breathes life back into their lives by re-introducing music and challenging societal norms in Nazi-occupied Austria. Unified again as a family with the help of Maria, the Von Trapp family must decide whether they will stay and be forced to side with the Nazis or to flee, leaving everything they know behind.

The Sound of Music features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp.

One of the most Oscar-nominated movies of all time and decorated stories of all time, the Sound of Music film, starring Julie Andrews, took home five Academy Awards, including best picture, and the live musical theater has also garnered multiple awards, including the Tony award for Best Musical, and the Grammy award for best Musical Theater album

The Sound of Music recently enjoyed a new found success and audience as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December 2013 (seen by over 44 million people) starring Carrie Underwood. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
