Meatloaf gets its name from exactly how it sounds. It’s traditionally made up of minced meat in the shape of a loaf. Although it is usually made from ground beef, however, other meats such as chicken, pork, lamb, and others are also acceptable.
As early as the 5th century in Roman cookery, meatloaf of minced meat had been mentioned. It’s a dish that is traditional to Scandinavian, Belgian, and German cultures. It is even considered to be a cousin to the Dutch meatball. It wasn’t until the 19th Century, in the contemporary sense, that it was included in cookbooks in America.
While being such a simple dish, meatloaf can hold its own when it comes to flavor. There are so many variations that can be used to make this either an entrée, or side dish. There’s no point in making something so simple, so difficult. Here is a recipe that will make you think, gosh darn, why haven’t I made this more often being that it takes no time at all?
What You Need: Meatloaf
- 2 Pounds Ground Beef
- 1 1/2 tsp Steak Spice
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 tsp Minced Garlic
- 1 White Onion Diced
- 2 Eggs
- 1 pkg Crushed Salted Top Crackers
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- 1 tbsp Spicy Mustard
- 1 tbsp BBQ Sauce
What You Need: Meatloaf Topping
- 1/4 Cup Ketchup
- 1/3 Cup BBQ Sauce
- 2 tbsp Spicy Mustard
- 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
Before you start mixing your ingredients together, turn your oven on and preheat it to 380 degrees. It will cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Using a large mixing bowl, add each ingredient, and start mixing using your hands. It’s recommended to use gloves, but if you choose not to, at least make sure your hands have been thoroughly washed. Once everything is well mixed, roll into a ball, and then place the ball in a baking pan. A glass pan works wonders.
With your hands, level out the meat mixture. Press on it, and make sure that it’s flat. In a separate bowl, for the topping, add 1/4 cup ketchup, 1/3 cup BBQ sauce, 2 tbsp spicy mustard, 1 tbsp brown sugar. Once these are mixed well, use a baking brush to cover the top of your meatloaf. You will want a nice thick layer covering your meat for a delicious topping.
Place your pan on the middle rack, and after 45 minutes, check on it. The meat will shrink a bit in the oven. Depending on how well cooked you want it, you can take it out at this point, or bake for another 5-15 minutes.
Serve with fresh vegetables, salad, potatoes, or serve it on its own. If you have a large appetite, cut yourself a big piece of meat, and enjoy every bite of it. With winter at our door, take yourself back to the cozy autumn feel with a savoury meatloaf recipe that’s more easy than you.
