Gay people are constantly trying to find new and exotic travel destinations. What’s also important to them, however, is that the country they’re heading to is pro-LGBT, of course. Who would want to go somewhere where gay rights are non-existent? Anyhow, Asia might be a great option for your next trip, honeymoon or even a gaycation. If the latter one is the trip you’re taking, then we know the destination for you. There is a country in Asia that’s extremely underrated, even though it’s one of the most important LGBT destinations on this continent. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s find out why Taiwan is a perfect place for all members of the LGBT community.
What many don’t know is that Taiwan was the first Asian country to approve same-sex marriages, in May last year. Taiwan’s Constitutional Court ruled that preventing gay people from getting married violated the people’s freedom of marriage and their right to equality. However, even though this was the ruling of the Court, the legislation process has been very slow. The majority of Taiwanese people support this move, and the only ones who oppose it are primarily members of US-based Christian organizations.
Largest Pride in Asia
The Gay Pride in Tapei was first organized in 2003, and more than 80.000 people took part in this last year. This is officially the largest Pride in Asia, and it’s taking place in the course of 4 days. The main parade is always held on the last Saturday in October, so it would be a great idea to kill two birds with one stone and visit this amazing country while the Pride is happening. There is a plethora of Taipei hotels where you could book your room, so make sure you do so promptly. The pride begins in Ketagalan Boulevard (just outside the Presidential Palace) and it follows the route to the city center.
Taiwan Tangzhi Hotline Association
One of the organizations that had the biggest influence on promoting LGBT rights in Taiwan is the Taiwan Tangzhi Hotline Association. It was founded in 1988 and has been providing support for all the members of this community ever since. It also provides sexual orientation counseling, education and publications. What’s very important is that this association offers consultations to different families in order to help older and more traditional people from Taiwan understand the LGBTQ community better.
First LGBTQ bookstore
Not only is Taiwan popular for the thriving LGBT nightlife – this is also the home to the first LGBTQ bookstore in Chinese language. First of all, it’s a very cool place that you have to visit (even though you probably know nothing about Chinese as a language), and more importantly, it’s a very important spot for all the gay people of Taiwan, where they can find various LGBT books, magazines, DVDs and even merchandise.
Spectacular gay nightlife
Once you’re done with sightseeing and exploring all the beauties of Taiwan and its capital, Taipei, it would be a great idea to relax in one of the many gay clubs there. The most famous one is probably G*star Club, with a light-up dance floor and a place that hosts some of the best Taiwanese DJs. However, there are plenty of places for lesbians as well. The most popular lesbian club is Taboo, which offers live music on certain nights.
So yes, even though it might not seem so, Taiwan is definitely one of the most important LGBT destinations, not only in Asia, but in the rest of the world as well. Plenty of gay clubs, the freedom to do whatever you want in the street and the possibility of getting married there are just some of the reasons why this place should be on your must-visit list.
