Gays on the money! Canada reveals new LGBT loonie celebrating LGBT rights

Oh hey girl, hey! Oh Canada, is right! The Great White North has done it again with epic levels of progressive realness! When the Canucks aren’t taking in Syrian refugees, legalizing marijuana, and progressing women’s rights, the Maple Leaf country is also a world leader for LGBT rights. And the proof is in the pudding…Well, the loonie.

Just when the US was thinking they were the best because they put Harriet Tubman on their money, Americans just got outdone again by their neighbor to the north. The newly released Canadian dollar, lovingly known as the loonie, is a coin with imagery reflecting Canada’s LGBT movement. Yes kweens, gays are finally on the money!

The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled and released a new one-dollar coin commemorating LGBT rights in Canada. The coin features the work of Vancouver artist Joe Average, who has supported LGBT and HIV communities throughout his career.

There is a delicious gender non-binary diva with gorgeous flowing long hair. The face on the coin could belong to two individuals or they may represent different aspects of one’s identity. The new coin also features the word “Equality” in English and French, and the dates 1969 to 2019: commemorating 50 years of progress in recognizing the rights of LGBTQ2 Canadians.

“For the past 50 years and beyond, Canadians have fought for their right to love, marry, start a family and live openly as their most authentic selves,” said Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance. “The Equality coin recognizes their triumphs and encourages all of us to build a better, more inclusive Canada—because like the coin itself, the more equality we have in Canada, the richer we all are.”

Now released into circulation, a limited mintage of three million gay dollar coins will enter general circulation and be popping up in vending machines, grocery stores, car washes, parking meters, and laundromats everywhere before taking over Canada as the fiercest coin in the land. A special collector’s edition version, made with pure silver and featuring the design in full colour, is also being released in a limited mintage of 15,000 coins.

Hunts—this is huge! Canada is yet again leading the way in all things fabulous, new, modern, and gay! To go from not being able to be legally out and proud 50 years ago to having a coin made for the gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, and queer communities is a massive sign of inclusion and should not be overlooked. Representation matters and that representation is here, alive and well in Canada on their new LGBT loonie. Oh Canada, indeed.
