We currently live in a time where those with platforms are being called on to be more responsible in standing for what is right, and the porn industry is no exception as there have been some porn stars that have recently been exposed for racist acts and comments that are being brought to the attention of their fans. HomoCulture covered Billy Santoro’s social media implosion and the ramifications associated with his demise, but he is not the only actor in the industry that has come under fire.

The Exposed and the Explanations

Billy Santoro was called out for his comments, including mentioning that people should shoot Black demonstrators that protest systemic racism and police brutality, among other things. Once he was called out for his stance, Santoro was removed from several gay sites, including OnlyFans, JustForFans, and he deactivated his social media sites after former fans lambasted his ideology. This one case made more people aware of the rampant racism that runs deep within the porn industry, and with billions of dollars spent by fans, they are doing more research into who they are spending their hard-earned money on.

Antonio Biaggi, who is currently running for public office, has in the past been called out for racist statements. The incidents include being slapped with a $14 million lawsuit for defaming a Virginia police officer and disparaging remarks about black fans of singer Beyonce. The porn star has still to date not issued any apologies for his statements or behavior and it remains to be seen if he pays the price through his political campaign as the Black Lives Matter resonates throughout the LGBTQ+ community.

Allyship Is No Easy Feat

Former gay porn star Race Cooper has been vocal about racism in the industry as a “daily constant”, and retired in part because of it.

Even porn stars that have come out against the racist practices of the industry have been caught in the crossfire. Austin Wolf is one actor that came out against Billy Santoro and had to backtrack and elaborate on his intent when his comments caused ire among fans when it was revealed the person in question was a black person that he told to “move” and that there are “plenty of places in the world to try out.”

“I woke up the next morning and it turns out that young man is a person of color. People are assuming that that conversation was race-based and it was not. I was talking to Americans in general: We have to vote. We have to register. Needless to say, it was a brash and insensitive comment, especially given where we are,” he added. “And I wasn’t paying attention at all to who I was speaking to. It was rude and it was a mistake. Of course, now people are lumping me into the same category as Santoro, which is really disheartening.”

Caught On Video

In New York City recently, a gay man was caught on video spouting off a racial slur and then attacking the person that captured his action on tape. Upon further investigation, the man in question was identified as Joseph O’Brian, also known by his stage name in the porn industry as Dustin Gold. Once the video went viral, several members of the LGBTQ+ community condemned his racist behavior and use of the N-word.

Activism and Cancel Culture

In the past, porn stars were reluctant to speak out against racism in the industry for fear of losing fans or casting, but fans are now asserting their considerable leverage through the capital they spend and are forcing actors to reconsider their stance and be proactive and anti-racist. Ultimately, it is important for the industry and its workers to be more accountable in dismantling the status quo and ensuring equality within the porn business by setting positive examples.
