Without question, 2020 has thrown the collective world for a loop with its unpredictability and months of quarantine. And while we are still suffering from the effects of a global pandemic, New Year’s Eve is another one of the key times this year where we need to find safe, small ways to celebrate.

This isn’t the year to go to large house parties, bars, and clubs. This is the year to be with your small group of closest friends, to celebrate safely. We know if you are going to gather, it’s better to be outside than inside. There are plenty of safe way to ring in the new year, while following the guidelines. We have worked hard to get this far through the global health pandemic, and with the light at the end of the tunnel, now is the time you and your friends need to continue to do your part to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Leave it to HomoCulture to throw some fresh ideas to help you enter 2021 in stride!

The Mini Bonfire

There are a few ways to countdown towards the new year with a bonfire. A romantic option would involve you and a significant other making a small bonfire outside underneath the stars as the ball drops at midnight. Or make it a small gathering with a few of your closest friends and family adequately socially distance for a few hours as 2020 turns into 2021. Serve hot chocolate and make smoores. At midnight, lit sparklers. Either way, you get to spend it with those that you love with hope on the horizon.

Themed Cocktails

Spirits and New Year’s Eve go hand in hand, so it should come as no surprise that a themed cocktails party makes this list. Gather up your couple of closest besties who are in your immediate friends circle and have everyone bring their own favorite spirits to share. By the end of the night, the hope is that you all will have at least one or two new favorite cocktails to add to their go-to list. Need some fresh ideas? Dress Up to Count Down

With clubs and bars closed, New Year’s Eve would be an excellent time to dress up in formal attire as you count down to midnight. Invite a a few of your closest friends over for an intimate gathering and share some personal stories of what you all have gone through this year, and what you are looking forward to most in the year ahead, as 2021 arrives.

Carnival

New Year’s Eve can double as a carnival experience in your backyard for the night if you are able to bring your A-game when it comes to creativity. There are plenty of games that you can add to the night, plus popular carnival foods like popcorn and cotton candy. Keep the guest list small, and you are assured a great time that celebrates the coming of 2021 while also respecting the current health regulations.

Zoom Game Nights

Zoom has more or less taken over everyone’s lives this year, so one more day and night of it won’t have much of a negative effect. If you and your friends are unable to meet under the same roof, another great option is to go the virtual route and invite friends to participate in a game night that features some of the most popular games on the market. Invite a small group, get feedback from them on which games are the most popular, and then look for ways to keep the momentum going well into 2021. This is an excellent way to get a big group of friends together, safely.

Outdoor Theater

Bringing in the new year with an outside movie theater is an idea that most would not even fathom during regular years, let alone a global pandemic. It may sound difficult to pull off, but all it really takes is a projector and a list of your favorite movies, both of which can be rented. Invite some friends and family over to your backyard and have a collection of potential movies to play. As the clock strikes midnight, your small gathering might have gone through the classics to the latest releases.
