One of the most popular shows in recent years has just announced that it is returning just in time for the holidays, complete with old favorites in the cast, plus a few new additions that are sure to keep interest at an all-time high!

When Downtown Abbey aired its final season in 2016, fans hoped there would be more in the form of a feature film, and they did not have to wait too long before their wishes were made reality. The sequel to the 2019 film is coming sooner than most anticipated, with work already underway on the new project and a release date set for December 22nd, just in time for the Christmas holiday.

Production Is Already Underway

Production on the sequel started officially last week with a screenplay by series creator Julian Fellowes and director Simon Curtis behind the lens. All the original stars of the show and film are scheduled to appear again, with new faces set to appear alongside them as well, including Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West. The initial movie followed a royal visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and ended with a ball befitting the Royal Family.

According to the film’s producer, Gareth Neame, “After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be re-united with the much beloved characters of Downton Abbey.”

The chairman of Focus Features, Peter Kujawski, added: “There’s no place like home for the holidays, and we can’t imagine a better gift than getting to reunite with Julian, Gareth, and the entire Downton family in 2021 to bring the Crawley’s back home for their fans.”

Expect a Few Surprises for the Return

At the end of the last film, the ending seemed to suggest that audiences have seen the last of Maggie Smith in the show, but according to Naeme, there is a chance that the acclaimed actress could reprise the role in the upcoming sequel. Downton Abbey 2 is a Carnival Films production, with Focus Features and Universal Pictures International distributing. Carnival Films is part of NBC Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.
