After a long time out, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, Broadway musical Anastasia is making a return to the stage this winter. Broadway Across Canada will be bringing the musical across Western Canada through a series of shows in January. Live theatre enthusiasts will get the chance to watch the show at the local theatres in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver from January 4-23, 2022.
From the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s. It tells the story of how a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past.
Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.
The show’s cast includes Kyla Stone as Anya, Sam McLellan as Dmitry, Brandon Delgado as Gleb, Gerri Weagraff as Dowager Empress, Bryan Seastrom as Vlad, Madeline Raube as Countess Lily andTaya Diggs and Marley Sophia as Little Anastasia.
The ensemble, on the other hand, has the likes of Mikayla Agrella, Lance Timothy Barker, William Aaron Bishop, Harrison Drake, Thomas Henke, Dakota Hoar, Veronica Rae Jiao, Evin Johnson, Ceron Jones, Madeline Kendall, Lizzy Marie Legregin, Victoria Madden, Christian McQueen, Elizabeth Ritacco, Taylor Stanger, Sarah Statler, and Lauren Teyke.
Anastasia’s tour is directed by Sarah Hartman based on original direction by Tony Award®-winning director Darko Tresnjak.
The Western Canada tour launches at Calgary’s Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium from Jan 4-9. It will then proceed to Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton from Jan 11-16 before concluding at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Jan 18-23.
Anastasia first premiered on Broadway in March 2017 at the Broadhurst Theatre. It played to sold-out audiences on Broadway for more than three years before expanding with productions on tour across North America and in Japan, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.
The show’s popularity is evident globally as it has been performed more than 2,500 times and sold 3.4 million tickets. It has also scooped 15 major international awards, including Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards and Best New Musical in Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.
Besides the cast and ensemble, Anastasia’s travelling production team also includes a host of creatives, namely Peggy Hickey (Original Choreographer), Bill Burns(Choreographer), Alexander Dodge (Set Design), Linda Cho (Costume Design), Donald Holder(Lighting Design), Peter Hylenski (Sound Design), Aaron Rhyne (Projection Design), Charles G. Broadway Across Canada will partner with provincial and municipal public health officials to ensure the safety of patrons, performers, and crews when the shows return.
