Batgirl has cast transgender actress Ivory Aquino to play a transgender hero character called Alysia Yeoh in the film to be released later in 2022. Fans speculated on the casting early in January 2022 when the actress Leslie Grace (to play Batgirl in the movie) posted an image of her and Aquino holding hands on set of the film.

The Philippines actress said she nearly gave up on acting as a career, after her transition at age 26. She along with many others praised Warner Brothers & HBO for finally giving trans people a chance in the spotlight to rightfully represent another part of the LGBTQ+ community on the silver screen. She told People: “You spend your whole life dreaming of these things,” she added. “And it’s really humbling when your dreams come true.”

Ivory Aquino will be playing the role of Alysia, who is also a transgender character, a first for the DC universe on screen. Alysia was created by DC in 2011, for the comic book Batgirl. Luckily for Ivory, this isn’t her first major role, as she can be seen in the TV series When They See Us and When They Rise, but Batgirl might just be the most exciting role she plays in her fans’ opinions.

In recent years, the representation of transgender people & the LGBTQ+ community on TV has improved quite a bit, with the first openly trans superhero being on the set of CW’s series, Supergirl when Nicole Maines played the role of Dreamer. Supergirl’s season 2 also had the character Alex Danversplayed by Chyler Leigh, reveal she is a lesbian. More representation is seen in the superhero universe with Disney’s series Loki, which has the main character identifying as pansexual and CW’s series Batwoman also identifying as lesbian.

Ivory playing Alysia is undoubtedly a great win for the LGBTQ+ community, and especially for the transgender community. Fans of Ivory and DC seem to be very excited to see Batgirl in 2022 and are accepting the win for the trans community with open arms.

The movie premieres on HBO Max in 2022 and will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The film is said to follow the story of Batgirl accompanied by best friend, Alysia, battling villain Firefly with an appearance by Batman. The original 2011 DC comic featuring the transgender character was written by Gail Simone and illustrated by Ardian Syaf.
