Take your Pride weekend to new levels as Alternative Pride returns to Vancouver, July 29 – 31. With in-person events back to full capacity in 2022, there is a thirst from the gay community to express their sexuality, and Alternative Pride has a new vision and line-up of six innovative events at noteworthy locations for Pride weekend in Vancouver.
Advancement, activism, and tangible change. For over a decade, entrepreneur, rights activist and lobbyist, and innovative event producer, Matt Troy, has been innovating and fundamentally changing gay culture in Vancouver. Together, Matt and his team of advocates have worked hard to make warehouse events legal, developed a new scene and safe spaces for the entire queer community, raised the profile of artists and performers, made sex on premise at private events possible, and have brought inclusivity to the forefront.
Work continues with actions to stop homophobic and transphobic hate speech, making spaces for sexual expression, and advocating for the end of the Canadian poppers ban, Matt Troy and his associates continue to press for change and disrupt cultural norms.
Post-pandemic, Troy is back, but with a new vision, to ‘fill the hole’ in Vancouver’s nightlife scene. His most popular event series, Backdoor, returned in late 2021 with much anticipation and excitement. Alternative Pride will pivot in 2022 to be about celebrating gay liberation, sexual expression, and personal freedom. It’s a shift in focus for the organization, which has previously worked hard to make inclusive spaces for everyone.
