IMG_2234_smCruising, or the act of seeking out casual sexual encounters, is, to many experienced connoisseurs, an art form. It takes on many guises, one can cruise online, in public, at a hotspot, in a bar etc. Of course, the more public you go the more careful you need to be, you wouldn’t want an awkward misinterpretation or a missed opportunity. For those of you wanting to get out there and cruise in public, here are seven essential tips to bear in mind.

  1. Be discrete

If out and about in a well-known spot, try to avoid interactions with people who are obviously not there for the same reason as you. Not only will it avoid awkward interactions, it could avoid potentially dangerous ones. Try to be subtle about your intentions.

  1. Use eye contact

It’s difficult to find out if someone is there for cruising if you can’t see them. Make eye contact, a small smile goes a long way, look out for the signals that they’re their for the same purpose as you. Classic examples are crotch rubbing or foot tapping followed by silence in a bathroom.

  1. Don’t be aggressive

Be respectful of people’s responses, even if you don’t like them. If you experience rejection, don’t ever get aggressive. Do what you can to maintain spaces for men to enjoy each other, safe in the knowledge that their choices will be respected. No means no, accept it and move on.

  1. Clean up after yourself

The vast majority of complaints people make about cruising sites are about the mess left behind. If you use a condom, tie it up and dispose of it properly, keep it clean for the next users.

  1. Be prepared.

Never rely on anyone else to make the preparations for the two of you and never ever, no matter how unbelievably appealing they might be, trust that a potential partner is 100% clean. If there is even the slightest inkling of a chance that you may be getting lucky, take condoms and lube out with you.

  1. Safety first

Try to make sure someone knows where you are going, it may seem like a paranoid precaution but it only takes one bad experience to make it worthwhile. If you are going cruising, especially on your own, make sure at least one person knows where you will be and when.

  1. Enjoy!

Perhaps the most important tip, cruising can result in some of the greatest sexual experiences of your life. Go into it with an open mind, relax, stay safe and enjoy.
