“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” said one Leonardo Da Vinci of the Mona Lisa fame. Smart guy. In a complex and unpredictable world, simplifying stuff, our lives included, yields the most benefits in well-being and peace of mind.

Nothing shouts “simple” like the classic martini, a drink enjoyed for generations, by many, without ever losing its lustre. Its very simplicity makes it a darling among people, a go-to drink when you want to hang back, relax, and mingle.

Where’s the lesson here? Simplicity. People enjoy the Classic Martini precisely because it’s easy to make. With just a few ingredients and a quick preparation time, the drink is ready in no time. When the world was thrown into upheaval by the Covid-19 pandemic, it disrupted everything, including work, family, and relationships. Getting back to normal seems like a distant dream though the vaccines should get us there sooner.

In the meantime, simplify to survive. Get rid of the physical and emotional baggage that no longer serves you. It’s the nimble and agile that survive and thrive in times of crises and unpredictability. So, get back to the basics and take better care of yourself as you unwind and enjoy a chilled glass of martini.

  • 3 oz gin
  • ½ oz dry vermouth

Stir ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Squeeze oil from lemon peel into the glass. Garnish with green olives.
