When the CN Tower opened in 1976, it boasted the record as the world’s tallest freestanding structure in the world. It would hold on to that title for over 30 years. Today, the CN Tower is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and is still the tallest structure in the Western hemisphere, largest the Chicago’s Willis Tower and New York City’s One World.
Located near the shoes of Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto, the CN Tower was proposed in 1968, when the Canadian National Railway wanted to build both a communications tower and an iconic structure to represent the strength of Canada’s industry. Ground broke in 1972 and took four years to construct. In the planning stages it was decided to add a viewing deck for admission paying guests to see the views of the city of Toronto, and to attempt to erect the worlds largest skyscraper. Both were achieved!
Today, guests can pay to take a one-minute elevator ride to the observation deck, located in the SkyPod. The elevator quickly whisks passengers to the top. Passengers can look through the glass-bottom elevator to watch the ground disappear below, or look out the window to watch the assent high above the city.
Once at the top, the observation deck offers 360’ views of the city of Toronto. From the views of Lake Ontario, to the buildings as far as the eye can see, the sites are incredible, especially on a clear, blue-sky day.
The observation deck has a caged-in outdoor deck where guests can go outside an experience the high winds, and a separate area indoors with a glass-bottom floor, looking down onto Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada.
For an additional fee, the more adventure seekers can strap into a harness on the EdgeWalk and walk along a tethered to a rail system around the rooftop of the SkyPod.
The outside of the tower is lit at night with LED lights. The tower is illuminated throughout the year, and during Toronto Pride, the lights glow in the theme of a rainbow.
