Experiencing Pride events are really exciting and there is always a lot going on. NYC Pride is a prime example of a major event with plenty of exciting activities. While the NYC Pride March and Island Pride are the two flagship events of NYC Pride weekend, there are many other options and new, exciting experiences to celebrate Pride, at events and activities that are fun and spectacular. This year discover three fun, spectacular, and new events at NYC Pride 2018: OutCinema, Savor Pride, and Cosplay & Pride.
Pride week in New York will begin with the annual OutCinemafilm festival, featuring LBGTQA films by queer artists with queer themes. Monday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 20, 2018, you can experience this unique cinematic event at the SVA Theatre featuring three selected gay films:
Ideal Home, the first film to be screened on 6/18, was directed and written by Andrew Fleming of The Craft and DICKfame. Ideal Home, about a middle-aged gay couple whose lives are turned upside down when one of the men’s grandson shows up,stars Paul Rudd, Steve Coogen, and Alison Pill. A Q&A with featured cast will follow the screening.
Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco is the second film to be screened on 6/19, and is a Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary about the legendary openly bisexual illustrator and couture collaborator Antonio Lopez. See life as it was in the 1970s with featured testimonials by Jessica Lange, Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, and Patti D’Arbanville. Talkback after the film with director, James Crump, cast and crew, moderated by fashion designer Anna Sui.
The third film of OutCinema to be screened Wednesday, 6/20, is From Selma to Stonewall: Are We There Yet?This is a galvanizing documentary about a lesbian activist and black preacher who form a friendship and bond in their search for the “intersection of civil rights and the LGBTQ+ equality movements of today”. Directed by Marilyn Bennet, the film features Darnell L. Moore, Sarah Shulman, and Rev. Dr. Brad R. Braxton.
New York Pride and God’s Love We Deliver have teamed up to bring an amazing culinary experience for the first time as a nice kick off for this year’s pride weekend. Savor Prideis an immersive experience for foodies while serving as a fundraiser for God’s Love We Deliver and NYC Pride. The inaugural event will feature barbeque cuisine. There will be tastings, lessons, demonstrations, and presentations by some top celebrity chefs, including Amanda Freitag, Michael Anthony, Zach young, Lazarus Lynch, and Jake Cohen. Savor Pride will be a tasty treat of a way to start your pride on Thursday, 6/21/2018.
On Friday, June 22, NYC Pride will host another first: New York’s first Pride Cosplay event: Cosplay & Pride. Partnering with Geeks Out, Cosplay & Pride will be a fun Cosplay cruise along the Hudson River for sunset. Costumes aren’t mandatory, but are encouraged on this cruise that will feature queer positive art and entertainment. Hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Phi Phi O’Hara with my DJed by Cameron Cole, Cosplay & Pride will be a super hero tour for the books!
