That’s how many people visit the Oregon Zoo each year and why it’s become the top pick of things to do in the entire Oregon State. Originally opened in 1888 the Oregon Zoo, the 64-acre park is home to 260 species of exotic animals from around the world.
Hop aboard the electric rail car in downtown Portland and be whisked along the rails and into a giant underground tunnel to Washington Park, located two miles southwest of the city. Take the elevator to the top to discover incredible exhibits featuring over 2,200 animals.
It’s easy to wander through the zoo, spending hours through the different exhibits, which are broken down into easy to-follow categories.
In 2008 the zoo began a large rehabilitation, updating many of the exhibits and bringing them up to a current standard-of-care expected for captive wild animals. When complete, the zoo will have the largest captive elephant exhibit in North America.
As you follow the large, concrete pathways, you’ll discover indoor and outdoor exhibits that re-create the natural settings the animals would have come from. Many exhibits have viewing platforms to get up-close to the animals, yet at a safe distance.
Entry to the park is just $11.50 per adult; an incredible value considering it’s the largest park west of the Mississippi!
