Love them or hate them, candy canes are the iconic candy of Christmas. Twisted or not, peppermint or fruity, and whether or not you believe the story of their invention by a 17th century German guy who wanted to keep the local kids quiet during mass, you can’t escape the peppermint hard candy at this time of year.
More adult versions have been created as time passed, with peppermint bark, a combination of peppermint and chocolate, becoming a popular item, both in stores and on Christmas candy making lists. The Gourmet Candy Cane cocktail, with a fruity hint of raspberries and cherry, is worth trying, even if you normally don’t love the stark, wintery flavor of peppermint.
