The Sour Twink, a cocktail with a name that calls to mind the adorable sweetness of a schoolboy crush, is anything but. This green wonder is potent, sour and sweet in all the right ways.
As a Pride cocktail, the Sour Twink and its green colour represent an important concept in the queer movement. Green is the colour of nature, and nature is healing — it provides us with an escape from the chaos of everyday life.
The use of green in the Pride Flag conjures up images of leaves, pine trees, grassy meadows, and other places we find ourselves when we want to escape from our busy lives.
The natural world is a place where we can find peace, comfort, and joy that comes from being surrounded by things we love — and these are exactly the emotions that are often brought up when people think about their queer identity. The flag speaks to a longing for peace that many queer people have felt while they were coming to terms with who they really are.
“Sour” flavours are representative of the struggle for equal rights that many LGBTQ+ folks have faced over the course of history. It’s not easy being queer. We’ve lived through legalized discrimination, rejection from our families and communities, the threat of violence and even — in too many cases — the tragedy of losing our lives.
The sourness of this drink is one way to represent these struggles. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come and how far we still have yet to go.
