Whilst far to often, the term gay is used with disdain, sometimes it just emphasizes the higher levels of taste that are often to be found within the homosphere. Take the tequila sunrise, often topping the lists of what are deemed to be ‘gay drinks’, and not in the Elton John sense of the phrase.
Now, while the tequila sunrise might be one of the more obvious cocktail choices, it’s a classic for a reason. The flavor of tequila is very strong but utterly delicious. In order to complement it, it’s necessary to mix it with an equally strong flavour; enter orange juice. The acidity and strong flavour matches the tequila perfectly, the whole brilliant combination is then complemented further with a splash of sweetness that takes all the harshness away from the tequila and the OJ to make for a dangerously drinkable cocktail.
Of course it’s gay, it’s genius, and everyone loves it.

- 4 oz orange juice
- ½ oz grenadine
Pour tequila and orange juice into a highball glass filled with ice cubes. Stir. Slowly pour the grenadine down the inside edge of the glass. Garnish with a slice of orange and maraschino cherry.
